Principles of Social Media Overview

For my final blog, I wanted to do an overview of Principles of Social Media. When the course started, there were about 16 students enrolled. However, after the first week, that dropped to nearly half. I believe people were intimidated by the course load.

Dr. Aggie was the professor for the course, and I really enjoyed having her as a professor. Since I’m not a public relations student, I haven’t taken any classes with her before. She was very personable and sweet. While the course may have been challenging at times, it made me a better writer and helped me develop a deeper understanding of social media platforms.

Dr. Aggie designed Principles of Social Media to be front-loaded. The first half of the course, up until the midterm, was assignment-heavy. The benefit to this design was that once the midterm was over, it was pretty much smooth sailing. Even though the first half was more challenging, it was a breath of fresh air to just see blogs and AP quizzes for the remainder of the semester.

The worst part of the course for me was the AP quizzes. Each week, we were given a 10-question quiz regarding The Associated Press Stylebook found online. Some weeks, I would do decent on the quizzes as the book made it easy to find the answer, while other times I just guessed. Almost every time, those quizzes left me feeling annoyed. The quizzes that contained punctuation questions really hurt my score as it’s one of my weaknesses. It’s the part of grammar I’ve always struggled with.

My favorite part of the course was seeing the statistics for each social media platform. It surprised me because I’ve never been someone to care about numbers. Being able to see which age group uses the platforms most or when the best times to post was fascinating. I was able to gain knowledge about the social media platforms I use daily.

Throughout the course, we had various assignments that related to each chapter. For Pinterest, we had to create our own social media metrics board and collaborate with Dr. Aggie. Another example was creating a podcast and a four-week social media campaign. Some of these assignments were time-consuming but they did help gain familiarity with chapter topics.

While it was the most difficult course I took this semester, I learned a substantial amount of information I will be able to apply moving forward.
