From Rejected to Selected

Image
I feel like a lot of people don’t talk enough about the struggle it can be to find an internship. In general, the process of securing an internship is time-consuming and overwhelming. As a first-year student, I have constantly felt like no matter how much experience I have, the minute an employer sees that I’m a first-year student, I’m out of the selection pool. People often find themselves submitting countless applications, just to receive rejection emails. This is exactly what happened to me. As a double-major student, graduating one year early, I need an internship each summer of college. Since September, I spent time applying for as many internships as I could. For months, I received rejection emails from different organizations such as the Miami Dolphins and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. While some organizations were big names, I did apply to ones that were local and smaller. Organizations such as the PGA Tour, I was able to make it to the final round of interviews but still go...

Simulation Overview

Image
In Principles of Social Media, a simulation was integrated into our coursework. Stukent’s Social Media Simternship allows students to manage and operate the social media for Buhi. Buhi is a company that sells backpacks to different audiences such as hikers, business professionals and more. In the simulation, the demographic of people who enjoyed hiking and being adventurous seemed to be their main target audience. This audience generated the most revenue, especially on Facebook. Each week, a new round of the simulation was due. This helped us to pace ourselves because completing it all at once isn’t practical. I personally liked this structure and felt that it was beneficial. It was always easy to manage. Each round took me about an hour to complete. Some of the higher rounds took more time because there were three components. This consisted of making organic posts, paid posts and scheduling influencers. While I have my own social media accounts and have experience as a social medi...

Essentials of Social Media Marketing Book Overview

Image
As my Principles of Social Media course came to an end, I wanted to do an overview of the book we’ve been reading. The Essentials of Social Media Marketing by Michelle Charello provided insight into social media marketing and the various platforms. While some chapters went over social selling and employee advocacy, we focused on the chapters that reviewed different social media platforms. The beginning of the book covered the basic principles of social media such as personal branding, identifying target audiences, performing a SWOT analysis and conducting audits. While most of this was review for me, I was able to learn how this pertains to social media specifically. The book also covered common metrics used such as reach, impressions, conversion rate and click-through rates. There are a lot of people who believe that some of these metrics are the same, but they aren’t. It’s important to understand the difference between each of them. My favorite part of each chapter was review...

Different Night Same Rodeo Tour

Growing up, country music was my entire life. It was the only genre of music that I would listen to. While I listen to other genres today, country music is still my most listened to. Some people call me crazy because I even lift and run to country music. No matter what, I will always choose country. I can sing word-for-word nearly any country song on the radio. I’ve been to two country music concerts, and they were exciting and healing. They were exactly what I needed at the time. In October, I bought tickets to see Cody Johnson. However, the concert was cancelled due to a vocal illness. I was upset in that moment and even more after seeing when the concert would be rescheduled for. The concert had been rescheduled for the summer, which I’d no longer be able to attend. I decided that I would sell the tickets and find another concert. Being a track athlete, my weekends are usually busy. Every weekend, there’s another meet to compete at. I was able to find a Thursday night concert that...

The Social Dilemma

Image
The Social Dilemma is a 2020 Netflix documentary that exposes the downfalls and problems of social media. It highlights the disturbing truth that social media can be manipulated. Whether it’s to sell personal data or behavioral manipulation, these platforms are designed to influence users’ decisions without their awareness. The documentary interviews experts from well-known search engines and social media platforms to provide an insider’s perspective on the issue. As the documentary opens, there’s voices speaking out about how social media platforms have reunited families and found organ donors. However, that conversation quickly shifts into how social media has done more harm by spreading misinformation. While social media has negative effects on people’s mental health, such as creating “Snapchat dysmorphia,” it contributes to unrealistic beauty standards. Surveillance capitalism was also a huge issue discussed in the documentary. Social media platforms require a lot of data, and ...

All-Ohio Championships

Image
This weekend was All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University. The competition began Friday and concluded on Saturday. This meet was slightly different compared to others, because athletes must qualify. Throughout the season, I ran and jumped high enough to qualify for pole vault, 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.  Friday, a small group of us left at 3:30 p.m. It was mostly short sprinters that had to run prelims, long-distance runners and select field events. When we got to the meet, it was cloudy and raining. I ran the 100-meter hurdle prelims at 6:45 p.m. It was far from my best time, but it was enough to qualify me for Saturday’s finals. We didn’t leave the meet until 10:15 p.m. to head back to campus. Saturday morning came around and just like that, I was back on the bus. This time, there was a much larger group competing. We arrived at 9:15 a.m. and the weather was beautiful! It had warmed up throughout the day and ended up being the warmest weather we’ve comp...

TikTok’s Ticking Time Trap

Image
Have you ever opened TikTok and suddenly looked at the time, wondering how it’s been an hour? That’s TikTok’s doomscrolling effect. TikTok is the social media platform I’m on the most. I enjoy scrolling on TikTok when I need a break but am always conscious about how long. It’s so easy to get caught in the trap of scrolling for too long. Whether it’s to keep up with people I follow or find outfit inspiration, I always find myself reverting to TikTok. As I’ve gotten older, my usage on TikTok has decreased. I quickly realized that the hours I spent doomscrolling could’ve been used in a productive way. Chapter 11 of Essentials of Social Media Marketing is all about TikTok. I found it interesting to read the chapter and be able to learn the facts of an app that I use so frequently. While I was slightly surprised to see the largest age group ranging from 24 to 35 years old, it makes sense because of the people posting the content. Even though college students are using TikTok, they are lik...
