Level Up on LinkedIn
Until I got to Ohio Northern University, I had no idea that LinkedIn existed. Not once was it mentioned to me in high school. As a freshman business student, that quickly changed. LinkedIn is now a social media platform that I check regularly. I’m always receiving emails about a new person wanting to connect. Freshman business students are required to take TREX which is where I first heard about LinkedIn. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to make me curious. Just 2 weeks into my first year of college, my sport management professor created an assignment where we had to create a LinkedIn profile and connect with him. This was the first time I had to set up a profile. I am currently in career planning which all business majors are also required to take. We had a whole assignment dedicated to the platform. Until last week, I had never posted on LinkedIn but that quickly changed. I made my first post, announcing my internship and a second one dedicated to the Social Media Workshop.
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform that allows
users to connect with people. Whether that’s to network with others, share advice
or look for job postings, there’s endless opportunities. In Principles of
Social Media, one chapter was dedicated to LinkedIn. It explained the numbers,
marketing strategies and how brands can create pages. To my surprise, I learned
that males are using LinkedIn more than what females are. The platform’s largest
audience is what I call the “fresh out of college, new professional.” It’s an
age group that spans from 25 to 34 years old. Believe it or not, LinkedIn was
founded in 2002 by a Stanford graduate. He realized that people needed access
to a platform that allowed users to take control of their professional lives
and find the right people with key information. There are currently 1.2 billion
people using LinkedIn, with the highest number of users residing in the United
States. The best times to post are during midweek, not the weekends. Let’s be
honest, no one wants to be thinking about their job on the weekend.
Today, LinkedIn is the platform I turn to when building my
network. With the accessibility to reach a professional in my career, it’s never
been easier. I believe LinkedIn provides users with endless opportunities. If you
haven’t created a LinkedIn profile, here’s your sign!
I like how you talked about being introduced to LinkedIn once you got to ONU, because I had a really similar experience. It’s interesting how quickly it goes from something you’ve never used to a platform you check regularly, especially once you start posting and building your network.
