Essentials of Social Media Marketing Book Overview
As my Principles of Social Media course came to an end, I wanted to do an overview of the book we’ve been reading. The Essentials of Social Media Marketing by Michelle Charello provided insight into social media marketing and the various platforms. While some chapters went over social selling and employee advocacy, we focused on the chapters that reviewed different social media platforms.
The beginning of the book covered the basic principles of
social media such as personal branding, identifying target audiences,
performing a SWOT analysis and conducting audits. While most of this was review
for me, I was able to learn how this pertains to social media specifically.
The book also covered common metrics used such as reach, impressions,
conversion rate and click-through rates. There are a lot of people who believe
that some of these metrics are the same, but they aren’t. It’s important to
understand the difference between each of them.
My favorite part of each chapter was reviewing the numbers
from each social media platform. I’m not a huge analytics person, but I found
it fascinating to see when the best times to post were, which age demographic
used the platform the most and much more. The book provided a unique experience
to social media platforms that I use daily. Instead of just using them for my
personal use, I was able to better understand how the platform was founded and developed
into what it is today.
The book also went into detail showing how businesses can
use each social media platform to better market to their consumers and use it
to build their brand. Each platform offers its own unique marketing strategies
for businesses. Facebook provides Meta Business Suite while Instagram offers
verified profiles. Most social media platforms provide shopping to highlight products
and new drops to draw attention to the brand.
The quizzes at the end of each chapter also helped
substantially. I was able to review chapter concepts and highlight the most
important information. It also helped me be able to recall all of the
information.
After reviewing the book, I feel much more knowledge about
the major social media platforms people use daily and the fundamentals that
shape social media.
I also found it fascinating to see the analytics. I think it was funny that for every social media platform, Sunday was not a good day to post. It is pretty cool to see the similarities despite the many differences between these platforms.
ReplyDeleteI like how you pointed out the differences between metrics like reach and conversions since a lot of people mix those up. I also agree that the platform stats made it feel more real and changed how you look at the apps we use every day.
ReplyDeleteHello! I also loved looking at all the metrics for each social media platform. I found many of them surprising and they challenged how I saw certain platforms from the usage numbers to who was really using the platforms. I think that the book really gave me a new perspective on social media.
