Growing up, country music was my entire life. It was the only genre of music that I would listen to. While I listen to other genres today, country music is still my most listened to. Some people call me crazy because I even lift and run to country music. No matter what, I will always choose country. I can sing word-for-word nearly any country song on the radio.

I’ve been to two country music concerts, and they were exciting and healing. They were exactly what I needed at the time. In October, I bought tickets to see Cody Johnson. However, the concert was cancelled due to a vocal illness. I was upset in that moment and even more after seeing when the concert would be rescheduled for. The concert had been rescheduled for the summer, which I’d no longer be able to attend. I decided that I would sell the tickets and find another concert. Being a track athlete, my weekends are usually busy. Every weekend, there’s another meet to compete at. I was able to find a Thursday night concert that would allow me to see Bailey Zimmerman without missing anything important. For the last 30 days, my anticipation has been growing. I even created a countdown on my phone, displayed on my lock screen.

Thursday was finally the day I had waited for. Just a couple days prior to the concert, my best friend texted me that she had bought tickets. When I got to the concert, Briley and I took some pictures and parted ways to find our seats. I was on the floor, and she was up above. Hudson Westbrook opened, which was a great start to the night. An hour later, Bailey Zimmerman made his big entrance. He’s known for being chaotic and rowdy on stage and he certainly displayed that. He was having just as much fun as everyone in the crowd. Hearing his voice live gave me chills. I went from listening to him for years to being able to see him in person. It was a beautiful and unforgettable night. I already started to plan when I could see him again.

In the end, it all worked out. I was able to see one of my favorite country artists, Bailey Zimmerman, and enjoy the best concert of my life.

    Hey Danika! What a great experience, I am a big country fan myself. I do listen to Bailey Zimmerman and Hudson Westbrook; my favorite songs are 5 to 9 and Backup Plan. I am glad you had fun!

    Danika! This is so funny because I remember you buying those concert tickets before TREX one day! I am so sorry that the concert was cancelled but I am glad that everything worked out in the end. I used to hate country music but now I love it and also listen to it when I run. I hope you get to see more concerts in the future!

The Survival of Spring

In theory the spring semester may sound like a breath of fresh air or even the start of something new. Potentially a new wave of motivation and a clean slate! Somewhere between going over the syllabus to the week of midterms, it’s pure survival mode. This is the reality of my semester this year. The fall semester ended up being an easy transition into college. I took six classes which I was able to manage, and I wasn’t drowning in homework. I had track practice during the week and an occasional club meeting at night. I was able to build my routine and schedule very quickly, getting into a rhythm early on.
