All-Ohio Championships

This weekend was All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University. The competition began Friday and concluded on Saturday. This meet was slightly different compared to others, because athletes must qualify. Throughout the season, I ran and jumped high enough to qualify for pole vault, 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.

Friday, a small group of us left at 3:30 p.m. It was mostly short sprinters that had to run prelims, long-distance runners and select field events. When we got to the meet, it was cloudy and raining. I ran the 100-meter hurdle prelims at 6:45 p.m. It was far from my best time, but it was enough to qualify me for Saturday’s finals. We didn’t leave the meet until 10:15 p.m. to head back to campus.

Saturday morning came around and just like that, I was back on the bus. This time, there was a much larger group competing. We arrived at 9:15 a.m. and the weather was beautiful! It had warmed up throughout the day and ended up being the warmest weather we’ve competed in so far. Pole vault started early afternoon, so I warmed up and got some jumps in on the runway. Unfortunately, my teammate and I didn’t have a coach for this meet. While it posed a little bit of a challenge, we tried to adapt as best as we could.

The first event I had was the 100-meter hurdle finals. I went over to the line and tried to mentally prepare, detaching myself from pole vault. I knew what I needed to do, and that’s exactly what I did. I set a lifetime personal record which was huge for me as I hadn’t been able to get my time back to where it once was. I went back over to pole vault, but they still weren’t on my bar. I kept my body warm and it was finally time to vault. The competition was going smoothly and another coach who had previously tried to recruit me had stepped in to help me out. It was down to three competitors, which meant I had made podium. All three of us cleared the same height, so the officials had to look at misses. I got 2nd which was the same place I got for Indoor All-Ohio Championships. Instead of a medal, they gave us batons. I stepped off the runway from competing at 3:10 p.m. and had 20 minutes to prepare for the 200-meter dash. My legs were exhausted. While it wasn’t a personal record, it was still a respectable time. Overall, I was happy with how the competition went and surprised myself. My face is now burnt from the amount of sun I got, but it was well worth it!

  1. This is so cool! I am so glad that you had a successful meet! It sounds so tiring to have to compete two days in a row at a large meet but that is so awesome that you did well in all your events. Hopefully your burn turns into a tan!

  3. Hey Danika! What a great accomplishment to be invited to a prestigious meet like this, let alone be able to finish on the podium after it. Track seems like a really hard sport mentally to have to change your mindset from one event to another back-to-back!
