Snapchat by Numbers

Week 8 of Principles of Social Media is Snapchat. Chapter 7 of Essentials of Social Media Marketing provides a chapter with information about Snapchat. College students like myself use Snapchat frequently as an easy way to communicate with friends. Snapchat has allowed users to stay in touch by creating the ability to send pictures and text messages to anyone added. I’ve learned that some people may be hesitant to give out their personal number but are more likely to give someone their Snapchat username instead.

My mom was someone who wanted me to wait to get Snapchat for safety reasons. She was always concerned that I would accidentally add someone I didn’t know. It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school that I was able to download it. As I grow older, my use of Snapchat has declined each year. I use it more to stay in contact with friends rather than sending snaps.

I’ve never really thought about the number side of Snapchat, but it’s important to note. The largest group of Snapchat users are young adults. From 18 years old all the way to 24 years old. You probably could’ve guessed this as it’s mostly college-aged students. There is almost an even split for the gender that uses Snapchat the most, but males have a higher percentage. Snapchat has 850 million users worldwide with India leading the way.

The average time for users to be on Snapchat each day is 21 minutes. To me, this number surprises me. I thought it would be a lot higher. For how much time people spend on their phone, it shows that Snapchat isn’t used for a long time compared to other social media platforms. Snapchat is the 9th most popular social media platform. I would say that this is because only a certain demographic is using the app. It’s tailored to teenagers and young adults. Apps such as Instagram reach a greater audience because people from teenagers to older adults can use it. The best time to post on Snapchat is Fridays and Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. This is probably because the largest age group is most active during those hours.

Whether you’re using Snapchat to get into the public eye or to simply stay in touch with friends, it’s important to know the numbers. By understanding Snapchat just a step more, it can help you use the platform more effectively.
