A Week of Firsts

Given my 18 years of life, I’ve gone through a lot of firsts. From my first birthday many years ago, all the way to my first time going off to college. This week, I added to that list! On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to photograph my first lacrosse game.

My on-campus job allows me the flexibility to sign up and photograph different sporting events. I decided to take a chance on the weather and choose an outdoor women’s lacrosse game. At my high school we didn’t have lacrosse, so I wasn’t around it. I figured this was the perfect way for me to learn about the game all while doing something I love. The weather had been warm all day, but as soon as it got to halftime, I was cold. There must be a wind tunnel in that stadium. It was a little unfortunate, but I still enjoyed taking pictures for the team!

While I was taking pictures, I had to switch with another girl because there was only one camera available. During that time, I picked up on a few of the rules. If you ask me, lacrosse is a mix between hockey and soccer. I still don’t know half the rules, but I at least know the gist of it! Once all 4 quarters had been completed, we went back to the office to download and edit the pictures. This process was pretty quick and easy because I didn’t take a lot of photos.

To add to the list of firsts I had this week, I was invited to friend’s gender reveal. I had never been to one, so I was excited that I got asked. Thankfully it was in Indiana, so it wasn’t a long drive! The gender reveal was at 2 o’clock and we managed to get there very early. We waited to walk in until there were more people. Before we ate, we got to meet a lot of new people. Then, the games began! While I didn’t choose to participate in any, I had fun watching! Finally, it was time for the big reveal! We all counted down from 10, the couple twisted the confetti poppers and out came blue confetti! They were so excited because that was the gender they were secretly hoping for.

All in all, these firsts were fun to experience and I can’t wait for more as college goes on!

  1. Hi Danika! That is such an amazing job/opportunity that you get to photograph sports games. I have also never watched lacrosse so I would have been in the same boat as you of trying to pick up on all of the rules. Have a great week!

  2. Hello! I'm so glad that you got to go to a lacrosse game. My school also doesn’t have lacrosse but some of my family friends play it at their school. I don't know much about the rules or how to play it either, but my family likes to say it's like hockey without the ice. That's also so fun that you were able to go to a gender-reveal party! I love going to baby showers at my church.

  3. Hey! I have only been to a few lacrosse games in my life, but I would say the same thing as you. It's like a cross between soccer and hockey, with non-stop action and entertainment. Good luck with your photography the rest of the year!
