Where is the Delete Button When I Need It
The scariest part about social media may be the fact that once someone says something, it is out there for everyone to see. Think about coaches and players of teams who have slipped up in a post-game interview on a national stage. While I know none of us are as closely followed online as professionals are, the same applies to us. One statement said wrong, and there is no taking it back. That is why it is crucial to not only think before talking but posting!
In chapter two, social media etiquette is touched on, but I’d
like to elaborate on it more. More attention needs to be brought to this topic.
When I scroll on TikTok there are countless hate comments no matter the influencer’s
page I am on. Do these people wish they had a delete button after publishing their
hurtful comment? Think about if your future boss saw something you commented
and regretted immediately. Would they still hire you? Even if you are angry at
someone on social media, you should not act out of your own strife. It’s not
only unprofessional but the world doesn’t need more hate.
The book lists a couple dos and don’ts and the one that stood out to me the most was “don’t post anything you would not want your coworkers, potential employer, or client to see.” People need to drill this into their brain! I feel like throughout high school people would carelessly post inappropriate things thinking no one would see it and that it didn’t matter. In reality, people notice and people will talk about it. Everything you are posting and saying online is available for others to see and goes into developing your personal brand. Your personal brand helps you stand out from others, and you certainly don’t want to be standing out for people noticing your hate comments. Your personal brand can also include what you stand for and the value you bring.
Professionals around the world must maintain their
professionalism on social media platforms. If you are an employee for a
business, everything you post reflects the company as well.
I challenge you to think before you post any comment and ask
yourself if it best represents the person you want to become. Build your
personal brand to be the best that it can be and help set yourself up for success
down the road! The creation of your personal brand starts now, not tomorrow.
I completely agree. Once something is on the internet, it is very hard to remove. I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing that this lesson was taught to us sooner, before we had access to social media posting.
