Social Media Workshop

This past week was the 8th annual Social Media Workshop hosted by Ohio Northern University’s Public Relations Student Society of America. As a student with a social media minor, I was required to attend. The busy day started around 9:45 a.m. and was followed by an introduction from my professor.

The keynote speaker was Caroline Schumacher from Give Kids the World, who presented a leader’s perspective on social media. One of the phrases that spoke to me during her presentation was that leadership is a decision. To be a leader, you have to take that initial step. She continued by explaining what your personal brand online is and what it isn’t. Your personal brand requires consistency and provides value over time. It is not a space for self-promotion, going viral or prioritizing an aesthetic feed. The biggest takeaway from Caroline’s presentation was to post with intention because one day, you realize people are watching.

The next session I chose to attend was about organic and paid social media. Amy Arnold and Kelly Savage explained how social media supports brand growth by expanding brand visibility, building trust, and amplifying word-of-mouth marketing. The takeaway from this presentation was that integrating organic and paid media lead to better results.

Tim Stried, Director of Media Relations for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, gave his open and honest advice regarding social media. He explained how it’s important to know how to use each social media platform. I learned that the OHSAA does not respond to any comments made on its social media platforms and has a strict policy to ensure professionalism and avoid taking political or religious stances. When Tim concluded, it was time for lunch. At my table were other sport management majors and Tim who continued to give us his honest advice working in a career of sports.

After lunch, I listened to Shannon Caldwell speak about how she marketed a mobile health clinic and further create the mobile health locator app. Relating to the book, she talked about S.M.A.R.T. goals and the benefits of defining your goals. It is also important to know your audience. Doing your research on both the primary and secondary audiences helps with targeting.

Finally, Tyler Louth spoke about how artificial intelligence is the new internet. With AI, correct prompting is key. Overall, it was a unique experience and valuable opportunity to attend this workshop!

  4. Hi! I had so much fun attending the workshop. It was a long day, but I think I got much more out of each session than I thought I would. I loved hearing a little about what you learned from sessions that I did not attend and especially about how your take aways differed from mine.
